Hoi Sang U Fund
Fund Purpose: To support research into the molecular mechanisms of neurosurgical diseases, with a focus on neurotrauma, neuro-oncology or aging.
Hoi Sang U, MD, FAANS, was born in 1946 in Hong Kong. He was educated at Yale College and graduated in 1968. He received his MD from Tufts Medical School, Boston, in 1972. He was a ranking scholar at Yale 1964-1965, received a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Cancer Society, 1978-1979, and the Teacher Investigator Development Award from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases of Stroke in 1988.
He completed his residency training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center under world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Charles B. Wilson. He spent several years as a postdoctoral fellow and research biologist in the Department of Biology, University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Dr. U has served as the chief of neurosurgical services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Diego since 1983.
Dr. U joined the faculty of UCSD in 1978. While serving as professor of neurological surgery, he was appointed the vice chief of academic affairs for the division of neurological surgery in 1995 and served in this role until 2010. He has an extensive background in all aspects of neurosurgery, including neurovascular, skull base and transsphenoidal surgery.
Dr. U is an internationally recognized specialist in the treatment of the vascular anomalies known as AVMs. Patients have traveled to UCSD from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong and the Sultanate of Brunei to take advantage of his expertise. His neurovascular practice also includes treatment of aneurysms and cavernous hemangiomas. He collaborates closely with interventional neuroradiologists Dr. Charles Kerber and Dr. Wade Wong to provide a complete program of diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. U’s other surgical interests include treatment of brain masses, including meningiomas, astrocytomas, craniopharyngiomas and pituitary adenomas.
He is a renowned expert in brain tumor research. Throughout his research career, he has been entrusted with millions of dollars worth of neurosurgical research grants. He has conducted studies on diseases ranging from human pituitary adenomas to glioblastomas and is pioneering work in gene therapy and brain tissue transplantation.
Dr. U has served on numerous scientific and professional committees. He has been invited as a distinguished lecturer or panelist at over 100 meetings and conferences. He has published widely and continues to publish actively, primarily in the field of the epidermal growth factor receptor in human gliomas and the control of differentiation of central nervous system progenitor cells.
He is also a member of numerous scientific and professional societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, San Diego Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Research Society of Neurological Surgeons, the American Society of Neurotransplantation and Repair, the Royal Society of Medicine in England and the North American Skull Base Society.
Dr. U is married to Vivien; they have five children.
