Howard J. Silberstein Fund
Fund Purpose: To promote resident attendance at national meetings and continued development of the University of Rochester Neurosurgery Cranial and Spine Lab.
Howard J. Silberstein, MD, FAANS, is a Professor of Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Neurology, and Orthopedics at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Silberstein obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from George Washington University in 1981, and received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1985. He interned in General Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rutgers Medical School at Camden New Jersey Campus. He completed his Neurosurgery training at the University of Connecticut/Hartford Hospital training program. This included a 6-month clinical research fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Silberstein also completed a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Silberstein is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons as well as the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has appointments at Rochester General Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital and Unity Hospital. He has membership in the American Medical Association, New York State Medical Society, Monroe County Medical Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Silberstein is currently the Neurosurgery Residency Program Director at the University of Rochester Medical Center and has served in this role since 2008. He has played a formative role in reinventing our teaching program as a whole. He engineered its growth to a two-per year residency as well as a seven year program. In addition, he has reconfigured weekly academic conferences, engineered a tailored 12 month research experience for every resident which has led to master’s degrees and away fellowships, and secured three additional area hospitals for neurosurgical teaching in addition to Strong Memorial.
As a testament to his commitment to outstanding resident education, Dr. Silberstein has been the recipient of the Joseph V. McDonald Excellence in Teaching Award multiple times.
Dr. Silberstein has been called the “neurosurgeon’s neurosurgeon”. Faculty from across the city as well as nationally, have turned to him for his surgical expertise. His clinical acumen and meticulous attention to detail has earned him a position of counsel for colleagues much senior to him. All describe him as compassionate, kind, approachable, affable, professional, courteous, a good communicator, talented, trusted, committed to his patients, supportive, a tremendous asset, and one of the most valued hospital providers. These qualities have made him an invaluable mentor to residents graduated from the University of Rochester neurosurgery residency program, and to his colleauges in the department.
Dr. Silberstein has been a tremendous asset to Neurosurgery, the University of Rochester, and the dozens of residents he has trained. We open this Fund in recognition for all that he has done and continues to do for our program.
