Howard M. Eisenberg Fund
Fund Purpose: To support resident education, training, and research within the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland at the discretion of the department chair.
Howard M. Eisenberg, MD, FAANS, was born on May 4, 1939. A native New Yorker, his undergraduate education was at Syracuse University, and he obtained a Medical degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He then did two years of general surgical training at New York Hospital – Cornell. He completed neurosurgical training at Peter Bent Brigham and Children’s Hospital in Boston in June of 1970. He then spent two years active duty in the Navy and returned to Boston in 1972 as a member of the faculty Harvard University School of Medicine and an attending at Peter Bent Brigham and Children’s Hospital.
In 1995, Dr. Eisenberg became Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas in Galveston. He was ultimately promoted to Professor and Head of the Division. In 1992, he became Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland and later became Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and R. K. Thompson Professor.
Dr. Eisenberg’s early research was in hydrocephalus and CSF physiology. He then became interested in the clinical study of head injury and had virtually continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and the DoD. He was a participant in National Spinal Cord Injury Studies and all phases of the NIH Coma Databank. Shortly after arriving at the University of Maryland, he was made Director of Medical Services at Shock Trauma, a position he held for approximately four years during a transition period. During that time, the Shock Trauma program was integrated into the School of Medicine.
Dr. Eisenberg’s had a long interest in skull base surgery and functional surgery. He is now developing a program using MR guided focused ultrasound to treat movement disorders. He continues, however, to take general neurosurgery and trauma call. Dr. Eisenberg feels extremely fortunate to have been able to work with talented and supportive colleagues, some for many years.
He has volunteered his time in various organizations that include the Academy of Neurosurgery, (where he was Vice President), The National Institutes of Health (where he was a member and Chairman of the old study section NeuroA), and a member and chair of the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery. He was also a Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery where he has served as Secretary/Treasurer and Chairman and was a member and vice chair of the Residency Review Committee for neurosurgery. In the Senior Society, he has been chairman of the Program Committee, Vice President, President elect and President. He was given the Distinguished Service Award.
In July 2019, Eisenberg stepped down as chair, but became the residency program director. Eisenberg’s outside interests include music but is definitely not a ready for primetime piano player. He is also an avid skier, and is obsessed with sailboats. He skis, while his wife snowboards; they both sail and together have done many ocean races in their boat. Eisenberg has two children, Nancy, a mother in San Diego with two children, Valentine and Jenny, and a married son, John, a former White House attorney in with three children, Paul, Sarah and Evy. He also has a new great-grandchild, Levi.
