Jack P Rock Fund
Fund Purpose: To promote resident educational activities including the development of cranial and spinal laboratories and the International Program at Henry Ford Hospital Department of Neurosurgery.
Jack Rock, MD, FAANS, FACS received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tulane University and went on to earn his Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Miami, School of Medicine. He trained in neurosurgery with Russel H. Patterson at the Cornell Medical Center in New York City with a research year at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda focusing on endocrinologic investigations of pituitary disorders under the direction of Edward Oldfield. After residency, he did a fellowship in Neurotrauma at the University of Maryland’s Shock-Trauma center and completed training at the House Institute with study in neuro-otology and skull-base surgery. His father, Erwin H. Rock, MD, a former chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, was a strong influence in Dr. Rock’s future interest in skull-base surgery.
Upon commencing academic practice at Henry Ford Hospital in 1987, Dr. Rock assumed responsibility for the skull-base and pituitary services and has continued to focus clinically in these areas with basic research efforts directed to pituitary disorders and anatomy in skull-base surgery. Beginning in 1992, under the leadership of Mark L. Rosenblum, MD, a primary focus of the neurosurgical department became the management of patients with gliomas. As a result, Dr. Rock became involved with basic scientific investigations dealing with the imaging aspects of gliomas and co-editing a textbook on low-grade gliomas. During this time, he has continued in his role as a co-director of the surgical neuro-oncology section of the department and was a member of the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors. He was the president of the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons in 2000 and has enjoyed being a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Neurooncology and Neurosurgery.
Since 2002, Dr. Rock has directed the neurosurgical residency program at Henry Ford Hospital with neuro-oncology and skull-base surgery continuing to be his primary clinical interests. Dr. Rock also became an active member of the Federation for International Education in Neurosurgery (FIENS) in 2004 and, most recently, after a number of international mission trips, has settled with the program in Myanmar. Beginning in 2013, he has continued to maintain a yearly series of team mission trips focusing on operative activities, resident and nursing training and biomedical education at North Okkalappa General Hospital (NOGH) under the leadership of Drs. Win Myaing and Kyi Hlaing. Clinical rotation for the Myanmar residents to Henry Ford began in 2016 and, more recently, Henry Ford neurosurgery residents have begun visiting NOGH for short clinical rotations. Since 2017, two resident training boot camps in Myanmar have been organized and run by Dr. Rock. As a result of these international activities, Dr. Rock received the Humanitarian Award from the AANS in 2018.
