Warren C. Boop Jr. Fund
Fund Purpose: To support resident education and research within the department of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and at the discretion of the department chairman.
Warren C. Boop Jr., MD, FAANS(L), was born in 1933 in Baltimore and was raised in Knoxville, Tenn. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (B.S.). He graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School at Memphis in 1956. Following a year of internship at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., he trained in general surgery at St. Marys Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. Dr. Boop also served in the U.S. Navy as a ships surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Independence. In 1960, he entered a Navy-sponsored civilian residency in neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota. Lyle French, MD, had just become chairman of neurosurgery there, and was encouraging residents to do basic research. Dr. Boop and Jim Story, MD, FAANS(L), investigated hypothalamic control of the pituitary thyroid axis and published the first reports of direct and immediate release of thyroid hormone with stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus. This investigation was the subject of the thesis for his M.S., awarded at the completion of his residency (University of Minnesota, 1964).
Following completion of his training, he received orders as staff neurosurgeon at the Oakland Naval Hospital (Calif.). As the Vietnam War escalated, he was transferred to Great Lakes Naval Hospital as chief of neurosurgery. In 1969, he resigned his commission in the Navy to accept a position as associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Ark. With Stevenson Flanigan, MD, as department chairman, an approved residency program in neurosurgery was established in 1970, the first in the state of Arkansas.
Since 1976, Dr. Boop was a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, chief of neurosurgery at Little Rock Veterans Hospital and director of the Pain Control Program at the Arkansas Rehabilitation Institute. He developed a correlative neuroanatomy course for undergraduate medical students at the University of Arkansas. He also developed and directed a city-wide flexible internship for the City of Little Rock, Ark. Dr. Boop retired from practice and academics in 1994.
Dr. Boop was active in county and state medical societies and held numerous committee positions as well as state delegate responsibilities. He was president of the Southern Neurosurgical Society (1984-85) and was chief of staff of the Arkansas Rehabilitation Institute (1986-87).
Dr. Boop published papers on nerve injuries, subdural hematomas, pain management, principles of a multidisciplinary neurosciences course as well as other neurosurgical topics.
He wed Nancy Ogden in 1953, and they were married for 68 years until her passing in December 2020. Dr. Boop passed away on May 19, 2021. He is survived by three children: Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS; Lynda, a professor of geochemistry at Arizona State University; and Brad, a neurologist, as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
