Carl B. Heilman Fund

Fund Purpose: To support neurosurgery resident research into the treatment of skull base pathology, and to promote excellence among the residents in skull base surgical techniques through anatomical dissections.

Carl B. Heilman, MD, FAANS, graduated with a BS in Chemistry from Allegheny College in 1982. In 1986, he earned an MD from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. He then performed a neurosurgery residency at Tufts Medical Center under Dr. William Shucart, finishing in 1993. After residency, he performed a skull base fellowship with Dr. Jon Robertson at the University of Tennessee and the Semmes-Murphey Clinic.

In 1994, Dr. Heilman joined the faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tufts Medical Center. His interests include skull base and pituitary surgery. In 2005, he became the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tufts Medical Center.

His CV includes more than 85 peer reviewed publications. He has eleven patents related to endovascular CNS devices. He is a founder and Board Member of Cerevasc, a company working on the development of an endovascular, minimally invasive treatment for communicating hydrocephalus.

Dr. Heilman has served as the President of multiple organizations including the Society of University Neurosurgeons, the Boston Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, the New England Neurosurgical Society, and the North American Skull Base Society. Dr. Heilman served for 6 years as a Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS term 2015-2021). He served as the Chair of the ABNS in 2020-21.
