NREF Success Story:
Dr. Jonathon J. Parker
Jonathon J. Parker, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery & Neuroscience at the Mayo Clinic, received the 2023-24 NREF & Academy of Neurological Surgeons Young Clinician Investigator Award for his project titled “Short Fiber Stimulation to Suppress Epileptiform Activity in Human Neocortical Epilepsy.”
His first senior-author lab manuscript— which was heavily supported by the NREF funds– was recently published in iScience. Dr. Parker, along with Mayo Clinic researchers, detected measurable changes in the brain within 18 minutes of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in people with drug-resistant epilepsy, a finding that could eventually help clinicians personalize treatment without waiting months to determine whether stimulation settings are effective.
